Junior Pennant Final
18/12/09
In perfect conditions for golf the Final of the
2009 Junior Pennant competition commenced at Waverley Golf Club today
between Commonwealth and Kew Golf Clubs.
Both clubs had tough decisions to make as to their
line ups. Commonwealth chose to leave out Ryan Laird and Jack
Pollock with Kew deciding to leave out Ashley Yong, Joanne Lieu,
Joseph Ellis, Matthew Broughan, Darcy Kiernan, Xavier Goring and
Hugh Hurren.
The day lived up to final expectations with the
contest tied at 3 matches all each side had to choose one player to
go in to sudden death for the Pennant. Tyler Fent had just won his match
on the 19th so Commonwealth chose him to go up against the number one
player for Kew James Rush.
Both players hit it down the left side and unable to
hit his second shot at the pin due to the trees James knocked his shot
just short of the green. Whilst Tyler could go at the pin he had a bad
lie and his second came up short in the trap.
James pitched on to 2 metres under the hole and with
Tyler facing a very difficult bunker shot James had a slight
advantage. In trying to just get his shot over the lip of the bunker
Tyler left it in the trap and after coming out to around 5 metres he had
to hole the putt just to give himself a chance.
Tyler left his putt just short and James
comfortably two putted to give Kew the Junior Pennant Crown for
2009.

James Rush H/Cap 7

Match One: Garry Sluce vs James Rush
Both boys started nervously with Garry taking the first hole and
James squaring the match after winning the second.
With wins on the 4th, 5th and 6th
James jumped to 3 holes up then Garry struck back with wins at 8 and 9
to turn one down.
Garry’s putting continued to let him down on the back nine
and James took full advantage taking out the match 5 and 3.

Match Two: Tyler Fent vs Tom Burt
Tyler jumped out of the blocks early to
win the first two holes then a nice par to Tom on the 3rd was
good enough to pull one back. After halving the next 4 holes Tyler won the
8th after Tom got himself in to trouble.
After turning two down Tom won the 10th to
get back to one down and the match stayed that way after good par halves
on the 11th and 12th.
Tyler won 13 after a solid shot in to 4
metres secured his par however Tom was not finished yet and reeled off 3
consecutive 3’s putting him one up playing the
18th.
Both players showed some nerves on the green
barreling their 5 metre putts a metre past the hole and when Tom missed
his return putt Tyler coolly holed his putt to take the
match down the 19th.
Tom over clubbed his second allowing Tyler to two putt
from 3 metres for the win.

Match Three: Anthony Wilken vs Nick
Burt
Nick got off to a good start with a birdie at the
first and another win at the second put him 2 up early. Anthony won the
3rd and 5th with 3’s to get the match back
to square.
A nice birdie on 7 had Nick back in the lead, then a
regulation par on the 8th put him 2 holes up. Anthony sank a
nice birdie putt on the 9th to turn one hole down.
Anthony won the 10th hole to square up the
match again but he had to give Nick on shot on the 12th which
put him one down. After winning the 13th Anthony had the
match back to even with 5 holes to play but Nick birdie 14 then rattled
off wins at 16 and 17 to take out the match 3 and 1.

Match Four: Lucas Herbert vs Ursula De
Neefe
Lucas won the first hole then Ursula with a good par
at the second squared the match. Players halved the next 3 holes and
with Ursula striking problems at the 6th Lucas went 1 up.
Ursula managed to win the 8th and turn the
front nine holes all square. Lucas took the 10th to go 1up
again but a lovely birdie to Ursula on the 12th had both
players level.
A very solid par on the 13th was enough to
put Lucas back to one ahead which he increased to two after parring the
15th.
Ursula made a really good par 3 on the
16th to stay in the match and both players parred 17 to take
the match down the 18th.
Lucas made a regulation par up the last to win the
match 2up.

Match Five: Jack Bruerton vs Andrea
Beck
Jack got off to a great start and with the putter
working beautifully won the 1st,3rd,
4th, 5th and a great birdie at the
7th saw him 5 holes up. Andrea kept her head and won
the 8th 9th to turn 3 down.
A nice birdie at the 11th put Jack back to
4 up then a bogey at 12 saw him hand one straight back.
A nice 3 at the 13th put Jack 4 holes up
and with holes running out Andrea snatched the 14th back to
stay alive.
Unfortunately for Andrea, Jack made a terrific birdie
at the 15th to win the match 4 and 3.

Match Six: Ellen Pollock vs Andrew
Cronwright
With wins at the first four holes Andrew raced to an
early lead. Ellen got her first win on the 6th but handed it
straight back on the 7th and then a bad hole on the
9th saw her turn 5 down after the front nine.
The back nine started the same way with a win to
Andrew putting him 6 up and then Ellen hit back winning the
11th and 12th holes to be 4 down with 6 to
play.
Andrew won the 13th to put him dormie 5 up
and closed out the match with a par on 14 to win 6 and 4.
