Woodwards' Win 2010 Victorian Amateur Foursomes

25/07/10

Father and Son combination Peter and Ryan Woodward from Yarra Yarra Golf Club have won the 2010 Victorian  Amateur Foursomes Championship played over the South Course at the Peninsula Country Golf Club on Sunday July 25th.

Withn extremely cold conditions prevailing for the first round of the 36-hole event, 39 pairs teed off in the event. Last year’s runners up in Terry Vogel (Cobram Barooga) and Rory Bourke (Southern) paired up again, determined to go one better. Starting on the 11th hole, the State team pair rattled off three pars before making a nice birdie two at the 14th and then repeating the feat at the par five, 15th hole.

Bogies at the tough par three, 3rd hole and the par five, 5th hole were their only blemishes in an otherwise excellent round. A further birdie three at the 7th enable the pair to record a one-under-par 71 to hold a two shot lead over Kim Olsen (The National) and Scott Hansen ((Hidden Valley) at the halfway mark.

Olsen and Hansen fired three birdies and four bogies in their solid one-over-par morning round to be one shot clear of Daniel Popovic and Daniel Valente on two-over-par 74.

The Woodward’s morning round of three over par 75 was frustrating with the pair unable to get their approach shots close enough to the hole to give themselves any real birdie chances.

That all changed in the afternoon with the pair commencing from the 10th tee and making a solid birdie at the 12th. Peter then struck his tee shot at the par three 14th to a foot to move to two-under-par. Following a bogey at the 16th, Ryan played a majestic tee shot at the par three 17th to six inches to get them back to two-under.

Birdies at the 2nd and 5th were cancelled out by bogies at the 3rd and 8th but the even par back nine was good enough to give the pair the best score of the day with a two-under- par 70 and the Championship.

After commencing from the 11th tee, Vogel and Bourke were on track to take the title, however bogies at the 3rd, 5th and 6th relegated the pair to the runner-up position for the second year in a row.

Slipping in to 3rd spot after a fine 73 in the afternoon were two of the State’s up and coming younger players in Nathan Holman (Woodlands) and Tom Power Horan (Cheltenham).

The Woodward’s capped off a memorable day by also taking out the Australasian Trophy which is run in conjunction with the Victorian Championship. Clubs and Districts nominate teams of two to compete for this trophy which boasts some very well known winners including Ivo Whitton and Doug Bachli.

The pair had previously won this trophy in 2008 however Peter had also won the trophy before Ryan was born back in 1991.

The shots of the day belonged to the pairing of Ashley Umbers and Lachlan Cain on the 518 metre, par five 8th hole when after a massive drive by Umbers, Cain was able to hole his three wood second shot for an Albatross two.
