Following on from the successful conduct of the Victorian Senior Amateur Championship since 1995, an expanded program of senior golf stroke events for male amateurs aged 55+ with handicaps of 18 and below was introduced in 2006. The Doug Bachli Trophy is awarded to the best performed stroke player while the Victorian Senior Handicap Trophy is awarded to the best performed nett player from all Victorian events held each calendar year. Both trophies are awarded via a points system whereby players "earn" points at each event via their performance for both stroke and nett scores. The Doug Bachli Trophy is awarded in memory of the late Doug Bachli, who in 1954, famously came from behind at Muirfield to upstage American Walker Cup player Bill Campbell, to become the only Australian to ever win the British Amateur Championship. Bachli was an Eisenhower Cup Team Member for Australia in 1958 and 1962, and has an impressive list of amateur titles to his name including; 1948 Queensland Amateur Championship; 1948 and 1962 Australian Amateur Championship; 1949, 1950 and 1953 Victorian Amateur Championship and 12 time winner of the Club Championship at Victoria Golf Club. A Life Member of Victoria Golf Club, Doug Bachli was
also named in the VGA Team of the Century in 2002. The VGA express great
thanks to Doug’s wife Dorothy and children Michelle, Simon, Mark
and Paul for their support in naming this pinnacle trophy for Senior
