Ogilvy's Back
07/09/10
Victoria's Geoff Ogilvy says he is finally back on track after
finishing tied for second in the US PGA Tour's Deutsche Bank
Championship in Boston.
Ogilvy fired a final round 66 to tie with Queenslander Jason Day and
England's Luke Donald - all five shots behind American Charlie Hoffman
who blasted his way to victory with an 11-birdie round of 62.
The tournament is the only one on the tour which starts on Friday to
coincide with the US Labour Day Monday holiday.
There was a strong Australian challenge in the second FedEx play-off
event with Adam Scott tied for fifth on 16-under after a 67.
Ogilvy said the result had been a major boost after his struggle
through the season following a season-opening win in Hawaii.
"I thought I was going to kick on from there, and I deteriorated. But
this is the best I've played for a long time, so it's nice," Ogilvy
said.
"The way I had been playing, third or fourth place is a pretty good
result for me, so I'm pretty happy with that. It keeps me in there
because I was out of the picture a few weeks ago.
"It was a really good week. Saturday, second round, I just missed
putts all day. Kind of weird, I hit a lot of greens and missed a lot of
putts, but the rest of the time I putted really well.
"Four good days, but Friday I just missed a few, and in the end just
a few short, but it's going to be pretty tough to beat a guy that has 11
birdies on a Sunday when four or five under is the next best score for
the day.
"I mean, I had the best seat in the house to watch that. He hit great
shots all day and I putted really well, and as soon as he got himself in
trouble he'd go and hole a bunker shot or something like that, so it was
a pretty class act, and he didn't look like doing anything but winning
after about three holes."
Ogilvy said he tried to make up the gap but Hoffman kept moving ahead
of him.
"On 14 I hit a good shot in there and he was in the bunker. You know,
I make it and he doesn't get it up-and-down, that's a two-shot swing,
and in the end I walk off three behind at least.
"I missed that putt. It was frustrating because then he goes and
birdies the next two holes.
"After about three holes it looked like his day. You can tell when
you look at a guy and it just looks like his day. As soon as he'd hit a
bad shot he'd hit a great one to follow it up and putted really
well.
"I think everyone is going to be pretty happy because he's a pretty
popular guy out here."
Of the other Victorians Robert Allenby shared 45th, Stuart Appleby
tied for 57th and Mark Leishman was in joint 61st.
Aaron Baddely finished in 69th and missed the cut for the following
play-off event.
Meanwhile, Victorian Marcus Fraser and Queenslander Andrew Dodt will
spearhead the international challenge at the inaugural Yeangder
Tournament Players Championship at the Linkou International Golf Club in
Taipei (TPC) next week.
Both are winners on the Asian Tour this season. Fraser claimed
victory at the Ballantine’s Championship in Korea while Dodt won
the Avantha Masters in India, both co-sanctioned with the European
Tour.
“I’m really looking forward to coming out to Asia.
I’ve never been to Taipei previously,” Fraser said.
Hometown heroes Lin Wen-tang, Chan Yih-shin and veteran Lu Wen-teh
will lead a field of champions in the Asian Tour’s newest
$US300,000 tournament from September 16-19.
The Yeangder event is one of four new tournaments to feature on the
2010 Asian Tour Schedule.
