McMillan and Power Horan Take Out
2011 Victorian Amateur Foursomes Championship
State Squad pair James McMillan
and Tom Power Horan from Royal Melbourne have won the 2011 Victorian
Amateur Foursomes Championship played on the St John Course of The
Heritage Golf & Country Club on Sunday October 23rd,
2011.
The pair also won the Australasian
Foursomes title for pairs representing Member Clubs and Country
Districts.
McMillan and Power Horan defeated
Loren Bunting and Will Hume from Lonsdale Golf Club by 2 strokes with
Paul Little (Royal Melbourne) and Ben White (Cheltenham) a stroke
further back in third place.
Whilst the day started off in
foggy conditions the sun soon burnt the fog away to reveal a tough and
demanding Heritage layout in absolutely beautiful condition
despite 50mm of rain the previous night.
The course proved difficult for
most pairs during the 1st round of the 36 hole Championship
however McMillan and Horan starting from the 10th tee got off
to a flyer being 3 under the card through 4 holes.
Dropped shots at the
16th and 8th holes combined with another birdie at
the 4th saw the boy’s return an excellent round of 2
under par 70.
Hot on their heels at even par 72
were the Geelong District pairing of Stewart Drayton and Wes King with
Terry Vogel (Cobram Barooga) and Ashley Blake (Shepparton) sitting on
74.
With the temperature rising the
course became very humid given the overnight rain and players were
constantly reaching for the waterbag. The only pair to handle the
afternoon conditions well were Loren Bunting and Will Hume who returned
an even par 72 after a bogey at the final hole.
Despite dropping 3 strokes in the
first 4 holes McMillan and Power Horan steadied the ship to return an
afternoon round of 77 to claim both titles.
In accepting the Championship
trophy, both players paid compliments to the St John’s Course
layout commenting “the course was in fantastic condition,
especially the greens which were excellent to putt on”. Golf
Victoria President John Hobday also congratulated The Heritage for
presenting the course in great condition and for hosting the
event.
Golf Victoria sincerely thanks the
club for providing the State’s best amateurs with the opportunity
to compete on such a beautifully presented course in Championship
conditions.
The event is scheduled to be
played at The Heritage again in October 2012.
