Round 3 - Sunday 28 May (Port Fairy GC)

Westcoast Champions
Jessica Pickwick (Kilmore) & David Walker (Chirnside Park)

Pickwick and Walker have held on to claim medallist Westcoast Open Amateur honours after round 4 play is abandoned.

In conditions which could be best described as miserable, players battled their way through wet and icy weather around the picturesque Port Fairy Golf Links. Sporadic sunshine and torrential downpour bounced back and forth all morning with a hail storm making a late appearance during the closing holes. The unfortunate decision to abandon play came shortly after the delayed completion of round 1 and severe thunderstorms predicted for the mid-afternoon.

Jessica Pickwick of Kilmore has led from start to finish to take out the women’s title by 5 shots from Commonwealth’s Alex Hilliard. Both players carded 77s today to finish on 54-hole totals of 224 and 229 respectively. Pickwick moved across the world from Kilmore to Texas in 2011 for US college, representing Western Texas before transferring across to Tarleton State University. Since her return, she has won multiple state titles including the 2015 Victorian Women’s Par 3 Championship and 2016 Victorian Women’s Spring Tournament.

Across in the men’s field, David Walker of Chirnside Park has claimed his first tournament win since his return to amateur golf. Round 1 leader Caleb Perry was on the hunt today, with Walker finishing on a 54-hole total of 215 (-1) and holding off the local member by a mere 2 strokes. Walker was a former Victorian State Team member and 1997 Victorian Boys Champion before turning professional in 2005. Reclaiming his amateur status in 2013, Walker described this win as an important one for his comeback.

Golf Victoria would like to extend our appreciation to both Warrnambool Golf Club and Port Fairy Golf Links for the exceptional way they have hosted the event. The courses were presented in excellent condition with friendly hospitality provided.

Round 2 - Saturday 27 May (Warrnambool GC)

Jessica Pickwick has extended her lead to 5 strokes while David Walker cards 2 red to jump on top of the men’s leaderboard at the Westcoast Open Amateur.

It was a cold and blustery start for players at Warrnambool this morning in contrast to yesterday’s pleasant afternoon on course. The icy north-west wind added to the challenge of the narrow and undulating layout, which boasts as the home to PGA Tour champion Marc Leishman.

Jessica Pickwick is showing steady form with a round of 1 over par 73 for a 36-hole total of 147 (+3).
The Kilmore member is now 5 shots clear of Commonwealth’s Alexandra Hilliard on 152. Steffie Vogel (Cobram-Barooga) is a further 5 shots back from Hilliard on 157 and a shot ahead of Victoria’s Nasya Sohail.

Leap frogging into the men’s lead is David Walker from Chirnside Park. Walker posted a 2 under round of 70 for 141 total to charge ahead by 4 strokes from round 1 leader Caleb Perry of Warrnambool on 145. Coming in behind the leading pair is Lance Go from Cranbourne on 149.

Play will move across to Port Fairy Golf Links tomorrow morning for rounds 3 & 4 with inclement weather looming on the forecast.

Round 1 - Friday 26 May (Warrnambool GC)

Local favourite Caleb Perry of Warrnambool and Kilmore’s Jessica Pickwick are the leaders after round 1 of the Westcoast Open Amateur.

In perfect playing conditions this afternoon, Perry recorded 5 birdies en route to a 2 under par round of 70 to be leading the men’s field on his home track. The 2017 Victorian Men’s Country Champion is a mere shot ahead of duo David Walker (Chirnside Park) and Alvin Hiew (Woodlands), both carding one under par rounds of 71.

Across in the women’s field, Pickwick is leading the pack with a day best of 2 over par 74 off the stick. The 2015 Victorian Women’s Par 3 Champion is ahead by 3 shots from local Joanna Flaherty (Port Fairy / Commonwealth) and QLD visitor Victoria Fricot of Noosa Spring on a pair of 77s.

Newly introduced this year as a Victorian Men’s & Women’s Ranking event, the Westcoast Open Amateur will be played over 72 holes with 18 each on Friday and Saturday at Warrnambool then moving west to Port Fairy for 36 holes on Sunday. The men’s & women’s winners will receive a conditional amateur exemption (category (k)) into the 2018 Oates Vic Open at 13th Beach Golf Links.

Round 2 will start at 7:45am tomorrow morning.
