Round 2 - Friday 26 May

Hepburn Springs Senior Winners
LtoR: Ian Frost, Helen Pascoe, Shirley Rodda and John Hoare.

Ian Frost (Rich River) has made it back to back wins at the Hepburn Springs Senior Amateur today, making a move on his share of the overnight lead. Frost carded rounds of 69 and 68 for a total of 137, a single shot clear of runner-up and half-way joint leader Hepburn Springs member Neil Egan. In his speech, Frost made mention of the quality golf Egan displayed in the second round.

Also making it two in a row was John Hoare from Pakenham who claimed the nett prize, with rounds of 65 and 66, narrowly edging out a three way countback for second between Bernie Frith and Neil Egan (both Hepburn Springs) and Brian Spalding (Kooringal) who all totalled 132 for 36 holes.

Helen Pascoe of Buninyong is proving to be the player to beat in the women’s scratch section this year, with yet another title today. The scratch marker posted scratch scores of 27 and 28 points for a total of 55 points, 6 better than runner-up Judy Langford (Wodonga).

In the women’s stableford section, local Shirley Rodda prevailed as champion, with rounds of 35 and 31 stableford points, she was scoring too strong for the rest of the field, second placed Debbie Gorin (Midlands) was 2 shots off Rodda’s 66 total.

A big thank you to Hepburn Springs GC, all the committee members and volunteers for their wonderful hospitality over the past 2 days. The next events coming up on the senior calendar are the trio of Heathcote, Shepparton and Tocumwal the week starting 18 June.

A fresh morning greeted the 63 players at the third annual Hepburn Springs Senior Amateur today, calm conditions hung around for most of the day, and luckily for the players the rain held off until the last hole.

There are 2 players sharing the lead after the first round, including last year’s winner Ian Frost (Rich River) and local man Neil Egan who both returned a 3-over par 69. Both men had rounds that consisted of a double-bogey, three bogeys and two birdies. Sitting one shot off the pace with a 70 off the stick is Robert Wallace (Midlands) and another further back sits Keith Finkelde (Latrobe).

Finkelde is the leader in the nett section with a 64 today, but is only one shot clear of a shared second place between John Hoare (Pakenham) and Brian Spalding (Kooringal) sitting on 65.

Local knowledge is prevailing in the women’s stableford section, with Hepburn Springs members Julie Azzopardi (36 points) and Shirley Rodda (35 points) sitting in first and second place respectively. Debbie Gorin (Midlands) sits in third place on 33 points ahead of a 3-way tie on 32 points.

Heather Harley (Kooringal) and Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) are sharing the lead in the women’s scratch stableford section, carding 27 scratch points to lead by 3 points from Gorrin on 24 points and newcommer to the senior scene Judy Langford (Wodonga) 23 points.

Set in the scenic Macedon Ranges surrounded by native bushland, the volunteer based Hepburn Springs club is a beautifully undulating and challenging golf course that celebrated its 90th birthday last year.
Players will begin their second, and final, round tomorrow morning teeing off at 9:30am.
