Abeyaratne and Jurcan claim Keysborough senior titles

2016 Keysborough Champions
L-R: John Noy, Mark Abeyaratne, Robert Harvie & Drago Jurcan

A record field of 87 players gathered at Keysborough GC for the annual 18-Hole Senior Amateur and first senior event of the 2016 calendar year. A beautiful summer morning built up into a sweltering hot afternoon on course, resulting in the relocation of a dehydrated ring-tail possum seeking shelter in the clubhouse patio. The course was presented in superb condition which is a testament to the efforts by the ground start and fleet of local course maintenance volunteers.

Mark Abeyaratne will be a name to watch this year, taking home the gross trophy with the day best score of even par 73. The Peninsula-Kingswood member and scratch marker is a newcomer to the Doug Bachli circuit after turning 55 in July last year. Abeyaratne carded 5 birdies, returning nines of 37 and 36 to beat local Keysborough member Robert Harvie by 1 shot.

Drago Jurcan of Keysborough put his course knowledge to use claiming the nett trophy from Metropolitan member John Noy. The 10 marker showed exactly why he is the reigning Keysborough B-Grade Club Champion, coming in with a fantastic score of nett 69 (-4), two shots better than Noy’s nett 71.

Coming up on the senior calendar is the 54-hole Royal Melbourne Seniors Classic starting next Monday 18 January.
