Amateurs Woo crowd

Min Woo Lee

As the only remaining male amateur heading into the final day of the Oates Vic Open you would have thought teenager Min Woo Lee would enter the afternoon composed and relaxed.

But such was the competitive edge of the 18-year-old, and younger brother of Olympian Minjee; that he would go on to climb up the leaderboard thanks to strong final round.

The Western Australian return to the club house with a final round of four-under-par; ultimately finishing 12 strokes under par in his maiden Oates Vic Open.

“Posting an underscore round was helpful, I came into the day thinking ‘just be aggressive’; I knew that I was the only amateur left but I thought I’d just give it a good go,” Lee explained.

“Now I’m off to Adelaide to watch my sister but overall the last week has been great for the family because we don’t usually get to spend that much time together.”

Older sister, and world-number-17, Minjee Lee finished with a score of three-under-par despite finishing as both the amateur and overall 2014 Oates Vic Open champion.

“I don’t want to be too harsh on her but I got her on this tournament,” Min Woo Lee added.

Fellow Royal Fremantle GC members Georgia and Ned Stokes travelled all the way across the Nullabour to see the siblings play.

“We couldn’t resist it when we heard both Minjee and Min Woo were playing on the same course so we thought we just had to come and see them,” the couple said.

“It is a lovely format and we’ve enjoyed it very much, we could complain about this afternoon’s weather but I admit it has been just as bad in Fremantle.”

The couple was there to greet Min Woo on the final green, hugging and jumping for joy when he revealed his final score.

“It means a lot to have them here, I played well as a result because it always helps to have a home crowd to back you each hole,” Min Woo Lee added.

In other news, Hye-Jin Choi was the leading female amateur finishing fifth overall with a score of 12-under-par.

Fellow Korean amateur Eun Jeong Seong was the next on the leaderboard finishing sixth overall thanks to an impressive final round score of 68, the best of her week.
