Aussies bow out of title race

Grace Kim
Grace Kim has shown remarkable consistency in Japan this week.

Australia fell from title contention at the World Junior Championship today after a tough day in Japan.

Sydneysider Grace Kim continued her impressive run to sit fifth in the individual standings with a gritty 73 today on the Chukyo Golf Club’s Ishino Course, east of Nagoya.

But the support from her teammates didn’t eventuate in round three as Australia fell from two back to 16 off the pace of the United States.

Coach Dean Kinney said the young Aussie team “continued to give their best effort”, but just couldn’t recapture the magic of the first two rounds.

Sydney’s Steph Kyriacou carded a six-over-par 78 to give Australia a combined seven-over total to fall to +8 overall.

Conversely, the Americans turned in cards that added to a -7 day and a -8 total to keep Japan at bay despite the hosts also going low with six under today and overall. Italy shot past Australia into third with -1 today to sit +3 overall, while Australia shares fourth with South Africa.

“The girls found today's round more challenging,” Kinney said.

“We’re still tied 4th, which is very commendable for such a young team and Grace Kim continues to be very consistent, firing a one-over 73 for the third consecutive round.

“That positions her in the top five individually and that is a phenomenal effort.”

Kim, a member at Avondale and the Australian Junior champion, is nine shots behind leader Yuna Nishimura, of Japan, but still well within reach of a podium finish tomorrow.

“The putts just wouldn't drop for Steph today, but as she said, tomorrow’s another day,” Kinney said of Kyriacou, who remains T11 overall at eight over.

Taylor, a day after a brilliant 71, couldn’t replicate the same birdie-hunting form and eventually signed for an 80.

“Isabelle fought hard all day and is determined to play well tomorrow,” Kinney said.

The young Queenslander is +11 overall and still sitting 16th on the individual leaderboard.
