Australia's good recent run at the Texas Open has continued, although it wasn't quite enough to secure victory.

Victorian Aaron Baddeley charged on a tough final day at TPC San Antonio, firing six birdies against just two bogeys to produce an impressive fifth place finish at eight under par.

The dual Australian Open champion finished just four behind champion Kevin Chappell, who rolled in a closing birdie to spark emotional scenes for his first win in 180 US PGA Tour starts.

Baddeley's charge vaulted him into the mantle of top Aussie, edging out Queensland youngster Cam Smith, whose 71 was good enough for a share of sixth at seven under.

Both were the second top-10 results and the best finishes for the Aussie pair this season.

Smith started the day in a share of fourth and his bogey on the first was soon overpowered by a spectacular 10m eagle blast from the bunker on the second hole.

But he couldn’t maintain the rage as each of his subsequent three birdies were matched by bogeys.

Also banking nice cheques were Matt Jones (T13) and Geoff Ogilvy (T21), while Cam Percy tumbled down the leaderboard with a closing 80 to finish T62.

Five Australians, including debut professional Curtis Luck, narrowly missed the cut.
