Big numbers hurt Aussie hopes

A rash of double-bogeys – and worse – has put Australia on the back foot on day two of the World Junior Girls Championship in Canada.

After a promising start at The Marshes Golf Club, in Ottawa, the young Australian team slipped to a share of 15th overnight, now 22 strokes behind leaders Korea at six over par.

Victorian Gabi Ruffels, who had set the tone for Australia with a sparking opening 69, again made enough birdies to have finished higher than her T21 ranking.

But the Victoria Golf Club member unfortunately threw in a triple-bogey on the short eighth hole and a double on the par-four last to sign for a four-over-par 76 despite her four birdies.

Ruffels remains in the individual title hunt at one over, but will likely need Korean leader Seo-yun Kwon to slip up from her lofty nine-under perch after rounds of 65-70.

Fellow Melburnian Alizza Hetherington made her score count for the team event, largely on the back of a bright start with birdies on the second and fourth holes.

But the former Northern Territorian let slip a chance to advance from her T44 ranking with her own double on the seventh and a string of bogeys in her 76.

Steph Kyriacou, of Sydney’s St Michael’s, did almost the polar opposite in her 77.

The New South Wales state team member was five over through eight holes, including her own double on the seventh, but hit back with two late birdies to reach T38.

Powerhouse Korea’s lead in the team event is already seven strokes from the United States, with Germany a further two strokes back in third.
