Border Challenge Battles - Final Results

2016 Border Challenge

Day 2 Wrap Up

The third and final rounds of the 2016 Cudmore Cheney Girls Challenge and the VIC vs SA Boys Border Challenge concluded yesterday at the Heywood Golf Club with both states facing up for the individual matchplay rounds.

In the Cudmore Cheney Girls Challenge the Victorian team needed to win at least 4 of their 6 matches to take home the trophy. At the turn (After 9) that task looked very achievable with only 1 Victorian girl down on her match, but unfortunately the South Australians got the better of the Vics on the back nine taking home the trophy by only 2 single matches.

In the VIC vs SA Boys Border Challenge, the result went right down to the wire with the match of Daniel Gill (Victoria) and Andy Fiebig (South Australia) ultimately deciding the title on the 18th hole. With Andy hitting the green and Daniel just missing to the right on the par 3 last hole, it looked like the South Australians had a chance to tie everything up. With Daniel chipping to about 8 feet and Andy lagging to about the same distance all was needed was a single putt to decide the fate of their teams. With both boys narrowly missing the title Daniel was able to seal the win for the Victorian team.

Day 1 Wrap Up

The 2016 Cudmore Cheney Girls Challenge and VIC vs SA Border Challenge has commenced today with Rounds 1 & 2 played at The Heywood Golf Club. With both states eager to take home the trophies we all knew some fine golf was to be played.

The girls competed this morning in an 18 hole Stableford event to decide the winner of the Audrey McLaren Trophy, that title going to Charley Jacobs from South Australia (39 points) with Kai Shipp from Victoria in the runner-up position (34 points). Round 2 for the girls saw 3 fiercely played matchplay foursome groupings kicking off the race to the 2016 Cudmore Cheney Girls Challenge title. South Australia have taken an early lead taking out 2 of the three foursome matches with Kay Bannan helping the Victorians to their 1 win with a 20 foot bomb on the last to seal the winner for Kai Shipp and herself. The third and final round will continue tomorrow morning with individual matchplay.

Round 1 for the boys saw 2 of the fourball matches go to the South Australians and 2 go to the Victorians. The afternoon round wasn’t much different with each state again taking 2 out of the 4 matches on offer in the foursomes matchplay. Some of the highlights for the boys included a hot round by the Victorian captain Jamie Scapin in the mornings round (7 under after 18) and some fine golf by the pairing of Joel Mitchell and Jayden McLoed in the afternoon taking out their match 6/5. Play continues tomorrow with round 3 of the individual matchplay rounds.
