Canadian shows up Aussie seniors

If Australians regard themselves as great wind players, somebody forgot to tell David Schultz.

Schultz, a highly decorated Canadian golfer, shot to the first-round lead of the Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Championship on Tuesday at the windswept Kooyonga Golf Club in Adelaide.

On a day when most scores reflected the tough south-westerly winds, Schultz was the only player in the 149-player field to achieve par; his 72 good for a two-stroke lead over Western Australia’s Martin Minogue, representing Lakelands Country Club.

Another Perth golfer, Hartfield’s Paul Chappell, shares third on 75 with Victorians Ian Peebles (Peninsula) and Kym Olsen (The National) and New South Welshman David Gleeson (Dubbo).

And further denting the locals’ aspirations were Kiwi pair Michael Barltrop (76) and John Batley (77) who also found themselves in the top 10.

Perhaps the biggest shock was that defending champion, Victorian Greg Rhodes (Coomealla), fired a six-over 78 to sit T11, unable to find a birdie in his round.

But the day belonged to Schultz, the 2013 Canadian Senior Amateur champion who was inducted into the Alberta Golf Hall of Fame in 2014 having represented his province consistently for more than 25 years.

With Kooyonga in great nick despite the recent horrendous weather across South Australia, the Calgarian made a couple of early birdies and again reached two under when he birdied the par-four 11th.

Only a couple of late bogeys, on the 15th and 18th, prevented Schultz from really stringing out the field.

The second of three rounds will be played on Wednesday with the final round of the 54-hole event on Thursday.
