Geoffrey Charnley (Rossdale) has held his nerve to claim the 2018 Victorian Men’s Senior Amateur Championship.

Charnley commenced the third and final round today with a one-shot lead over last year’s winner Douglas Francis and the two battled it out on the beautifully presented Shepparton Golf Club.

Francis looked to be on a mission and managed to gain a stroke on Charnley through the front nine which saw the pair all square with nine holes to go.

Still level through 12, the 13th hole proved to be the difference with Charnley birdieing the long Par 4 and Francis making bogey.

After multiple second place finishes this year, Charnley’s scores of 74, 72 and 77 for a 223 total was enough to see him crowned this year’s champion.

The nett section saw senior stalwart Ignatius Duivenvoorden (Yarram) take out the title after missing the last few months of tournaments due to holidaying through Europe.

Duivenvoorden, a star in the nett section, is making a charge towards his 6th Paul Lulofs title and produced three great rounds to claim this year’s event.

Finishing just one shot back was Shepparton member Gerald Pennefather.

The 82 year old came close to shooting his age in today’s final round after producing a magnificent 65 nett off a handicap of 21.

Gross age group gross winners went to Geoffrey Charnley (55-59), Ken O’Brien (60-64), Chris Tatt (65-89) and Pat Giles (70+).

In the nett age groups, the honours went to Stephen Valentine (55-59), Geoff Hamill (60-64), Ignatius Duivenvoorden (65-69) and Gerald Pennefather (70+).

Golf Victoria would like to extend its sincere thanks to both Hill Top and Shepparton Golf Clubs for hosting this year’s Victorian Men’s Senior Amateur Championship.

A huge thank you must also go to the Greater Shepparton City Council for their support to help make this such a great event.
