Choi makes US Open grade

Robyn Choi continues to impress in her first year in the American college system.

Queenslander Robyn Choi has booked a berth in the US Women's Open.

Choi, a member at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast, advanced by firing rounds of 67-72 at the sectional qualifier in Brighton, Colorado.

Choi, 19, was thrilled with the opportunity to play in what's regarded as the pre-eminent major on the women's calendar, this year at Trump National in New Jersey from 13-16 July.

"It feels great," Choi told her Colorado University website, cubuffs.com.

"I am getting a lot of congratulations and support from everyone and to be able to play a major tournament feels amazing.

"(Today) wasn't that much different to any other tournament ... (and) I mostly played for the experience, since it was my first USGA tournament.

"I happened to play well in the first round, so I stared having more hope and confidence in myself.

"I am looking forward to playing in one of the most competitive fields ever and learning from the best players around the world.

"I think it will be great experience just being able to play."

Choi, who represented Australia at the World Amateur Teams Championship last year and also a member of Australia's runner-up 2016 Queen Sirikit team, was second at Riverdale Golf Club, one shot adrift of Denver amateur Jennifer Kupcho.

Only those two qualified from Colorado, with 21 events to be held across five countries in the next three weeks.

University of Colorado golf head coach Anne Kelly was thrilled with the young Australian's achievement in becoming just the third from the college to reach the US Women's Open.

"Robyn is one of the hardest working golfers we have ever had on the team," Kelly told cubuffs.com.

"Brent, our assistant coach, kept saying she was ready to break out any time, which I agreed with (and) she played some high quality golf for 36 holes.

"Going into the qualifying day, a player knows that there are only two spots available and that you have to play great (to advance).

"That's a lot of pressure and Robyn handled it very well."
