Claney & McNeil battle conditions for wins at Kingston Heath

2016 Kingston Heath SA Winners
Gordon Claney & Rod McNeil

Gordon Claney has made it two wins in as many days as he tamed the brutal winds to win the 2016 Kingston Heath Senior Amateur this afternoon. Unpleasant winds were faced throughout the entire round which guaranteed some high scores. Claney, a local member at Kingston Heath, was the most enduring out of the 96 field with his round of 76 (+4) which included three impressive birdies.

The top two on the leaderboard hadn’t changed from yesterday with John Wheeler once again claiming runner up, shooting a round of 77.

Players came from wide and far to get their opportunity to play one of the best courses in the world.

“My favourite golf course in Australia and one of the world’s best” was a line used by Australian great Ian Baker-Finch.

The field comprised of 15 interstaters with 2 coming from New Zealand.

In the nett, Rod McNeil (Eastern) carded a fantastic nett score of 73 to claim the Handicap event.

With the tough conditions it was no surprise that the average score was 93.1 with the average nett score of 83.4.

The #SeniorSandbelt week continues tomorrow where Commonwealth will host their Senior Amateur. Play begins at 12:45pm. The forecast is for slightly lighter winds with the possible shower.
