Day, Swatton in surprise split

Jason Day has taken the dramatic decision to end his player-caddie relationship with Colin Swatton, his mentor and coach of more than 15 years.

While Swatton will remain as his instructor, Day is using his school friend Luke Reardon on the bag at the BMW Championship this week in Chicago.

"I'm not breaking up with him; he's still my coach and always will be," said Day. "When (I'm) playing poorly, that's when a true test of a relationship happens between a player and a caddie.

"Col has taken me from a 12-year-old kid to where I am today ... but slowly, over time, the chemistry between Col and I (diminished) a little bit. Unfortunately, sometimes it just doesn't work out and it was more my fault. We're still close and we'll always be close."

The surprise decision came after Rory McIlroy split from J.P. Fitzgerald and Phil Mickelson from Jim McKay this year.

Day will have fellow-professional David Lutterus, another close friend, on his bag for the Presidents Cup because Reardon's visa will have expired by then.

"I made a decision last week to see how the rest of this year goes with a couple of buddies on the bag," said Day. "If that doesn't work out, and I don't like the way I work with these guys then, there may be a bag share for (Swatton) next year ... at the majors."

Swatton and Day met when the Queenslander was just 12, and the coach has been on his bag for all of his big wins.

But Day was clearly looking to make changes at the end of what so far has been a winless season in the United States.
