Friday Women’s Pennant Finals Decided

Div 1 Winners
Division 1 Champions - Huntingdale

On a near perfect late Melbourne Autumn day with crisp sunshine, little breeze and a hazy hue, the finals of the 2017 Friday Women’s Pennant competition were decided on Friday 12 May at Riversdale and Peninsula-Kingswood (Kingswood site).

Three of the four finals saw nail-biting conclusions beginning with the Division 1 final at Riversdale between Victoria Huntingdale. Three of the seven matches were decided at the final hole and most crucially it was the No.7 contest between Victoria’s Kristine Vandertop and Annie Seccull from Huntingdale that would prove to be the decider. Seccull prevailed at the 18th to secure the vital fourth match and the flag for her club.

Similarly in Division 2, the unbeaten Metropolitan team had a massive fight on its hands against Eastwood for the entire day. With three matches in, Eastwood looked to have one hand on the flag until Metropolitan team captain Anne Bannenberg defeated Eastwood No.7 Gayle Wilson at the 19th to level proceedings. In a tense finale, Metropolitan No.2 Louise Winder secured the Division 2 title by fighting back from a three hole deficit to win by 2holes in the deciding match over Eastwood’s Dawn Nagel.

In Division 3, the final between Cranbourne and Green Acres constantly changed throughout the day as firstly one team and then the other seemed to gain the ascendency. At three matches apiece, it came down to Green Acres team captain Barb Cummins holding steady to win her match at the 18th in defeating Cranbourne No. 4 Vikki Templeton to secure the Division 3 flag for the ‘green caps’.

Eastern wrapped up the Division 4 season in style with a six match to one victory over Centenary Park. Comfortable wins to Coral White, Hwahee Han and Kayoko Sato set the platform for the flag winning performance with Insook Park, Wendy Ji and Barbara Arbon completing the win. Centenary Park’s Karen Lorkin was the club’s only winner on the day with a final hole victory over Eastern’s Judy Thompson.

32 clubs participated in 2017 Friday Women’s Pennant involving 224 players each week across the seven round season. The finals of GV Women’s, Men’s and Colts Pennant will be played on Sunday 21 May.
