Gill runs red hot

In uncharacteristic fashion, the weather at Keysborough was ideal for the 94 strong field that took to the course this morning. Unfortunately, the event has a notorious history for bringing some of the of the worst playing conditions with wet and windy weather tormenting players in previous years.  It was once again a bleak forecast with heavy rain and high winds expected but thankfully relatively calm and mild conditions provided great scoring opportunities.

Making the most of the day was Commonwealth’s Daniel Gill who continues to impress. After a solid performance in April as a member of the Victorian Junior team, the 16-year old blitzed the field with a red hot six-under 67. Gill carded an amazing eight birdies, eight pars and two bogeys for victory. This isn’t the first time Gill has fired low sub-par rounds, in December last year he signed for a round of 64 at the Junior Victorian Open.

In the overall girl’s section, Piper Stubbs was too strong after carding a round of four-over par 78 in the benign conditions. The Huntingdale member finished one shot clear of Tiana Wanigasekera and two shots ahead of Keeley Marx.

Southern’s Lachlan Robinson found the day easy going when he posted a dominating score of 67 nett in the A division. Jacob Taberner and Daniel Gill finished two shots back, bettering their handicaps by four shots on 69.

Matthew Tofinga narrowly notched out Roi Fortinez on a count-back to walk away with first place in the B division following a round of 68 from his 19 handicap. Meanwhile, Conor Doherty from Brighton closed with a convincing with 44 points to sit proudly at the top of the leaderboard in C Division. A trio of players including Caden Ong, Adam Mao and Zac Bambridge finished on 41 points apiece.
