South Australia’s boys have thrown a cat among the pigeons as the Junior Interstate Series began with a couple of shocks in Tasmania.

And ushering in a new era in the girls’ event, the Composite Team – comprising players from Tasmania, Northern Territory and the ACT – won their first ever match, stunning Western Australia on debut.

But the big shock came late on day one at Ulverstone when South Australian No.1 Lachlan Barker capitalised on the earlier good work of his teammates to down reigning champ Victoria 3-2.

Riding the wave of success generated in last week’s Australian Junior Championship, the Glenelg pair of Jackson Kalz and left-handed Ben Layton set the table with wins in matches No.5 and No.3 respectively.

And then their clubmate Barker, third in the individual national championship, sealed the deal with a clutch performance against Victorian No.1 Cameron John, winning 3&2 to give SA a 3-2 win overall.

No other surprises eventuated in the boys’ matches, with Queensland toppling SA 4-1 in their morning clash.

Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia are all unbeaten after day one with WA marginally ahead on matches won.

In the girls competition, though, WA was stunned by the Composite Team in Devonport.

Northern Territory’s Jade Longstaff got the ball rolling with a win at No.4 against Alysha Ahnantakrishnan before the local girls took control.

Tasmania Golf Club mates Zahara Lemon, at No.3, then Georgia Milbourne, at No.2, were too strong for Claudia Pisano and Kirsten Rudgeley to seal a 3-2 overall win against a traditional power.

Defending champion Victoria got the better of old rival New South Wales in their clash to sit jointly atop the ladder at 2-0 after a tense win against the Composite Team in the afternoon.

The Vics are alongside Queensland which took care of SA and WA in its two matches to take the lead on matches won.

The third round of both boys’ and girls’ competitions continues tomorrow.
