Green rallies, but misses US Open berth

Hannah Green

Perth’s Hannah Green has fallen agonisingly short of qualifying for the US Women’s Open.

Green, 19, roared home but fell three shots shy of a playoff at Woodlands Country Club, near Houston, Texas.

The Golf Australia national squad member had earlier started poorly in the 36-hole sectional qualifier, with just two slots available at in the elite field at Cordevalle, south-east of San Francisco from July 7-10 for arguably the biggest of the women’s major championships.

Green began with bogey on the 10th and 11th holes and could only manage one birdie against five blemishes in her opening 76.

But steeled for her afternoon round, the West Australian skipper, who went through last week’s Interstate Series undefeated, charged back into the mix with birdies on the third, fourth and sixth holes.

A bogey on the eighth was cancelled out by more birdies on the ninth and par-five 12th holes, leaving the Mount Lawley ace at even par and just one shot shy of what would ultimately become the playoff figure.

A bogey on the long par-four 15th was quickly forgotten with birdie on the par-five 16th, but in pressing for more, Green made bogeys on each of the closing holes to leave her in sixth place at two over after her closing 70.

Mexico’s Maria Gabriela Lopez Butron was the medallist at four under par, with three players tied at one under and locked in a playoff when darkness fell, including Dutch tour pro Christel Boeljon.

Ohio’s Marissa Steen was fifth at even par after making three birdies in her final four holes.

Green, a joint winner of the Karrie Webb Series Scholarship, will attend the year's third major, but now outside the ropes as a guest of the former world No.1.
