Grosvenor, Wooster in familiar territory

Sue Wooster tees off at Torquay Sands in the second round of the Australian Mid-Amateur Championship.

Ashley Grosvenor has been here before – and this time he’s keen for a rewrite to the script.

The Keperra ace, for the second year in a row, leads the Australian Mid-Amateur Championship after the second of three rounds.

But tomorrow, at Torquay Sands on Victoria’s Surf Coast, the Queenslander will hope things turn out differently to last year when he was run down by Mark Boulton.

Grosvenor shot a four-over-par 76 today to total even par, but took the lead as first-round leader Andrew Tharle after the Royal Canberra champ shot remarkably fared 13 shots worse than his opening 66 to leave him one over.

He was joined on that total by Yarra Yarra’s Leo Lui (76) while if Grosvenor were nervous, he might have Boulton on his mind again after the Howlong gun equalled the day’s best score (72) to sit fourth at five over.

Four-time Torquay Sands champion Craig Corker remains in contention at six over alongside Maroochy River’s Dean Ellis, while Tasmanian Interstate Series captain Greg Longmore’s 72 gave him an outside hope at seven over.

Tennis legend Todd Woodbridge impressed again with a 76 to sit T12 at 11 over with one round to play.

In the women’s championship, Sue Wooster, of The National, took a stranglehold on what would be her fourth Mid-Amateur crown.

Wooster will take an eight-stroke cushion into the final round after a 77 left her nine over.

Moore Park’s Gemma Dooley and Northern’s Adele Huggard are tied second on 17 over, while former Victorian Interstate Series winning team member Dayle Marshall is fourth on 21 over.

New South Wales holds a narrow five-stroke lead in the team championship with the last groups off around 9am on Friday.
