Australia's Nathan Holman continues to lead the Maybank Championship in Malaysia through two rounds.

Holman, 24, a member of Golf Australia's rookie squad of young professionals, followed up his opening 64 with a 65 yesterday, pouring in consecutive birdies at the 15th, 16th and 17th holes.

The $US 3 million tournament is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the European Tour.

Holman, a product of Woodlands Golf Club in Melbourne, came through the Victorian Institute of Sport's development pathways as well as Golf Australia's programs.

He is one of a cluster of exciting new talents to emerge in the pro ranks in the past year, having won his maiden tournament at the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast late in 2015. He is ranked 10th in the European Tour's Race to Dubai points list, and 176th on the official world golf rankings.

Victorian Holman followed his win on the Gold Coast with two top-40 finishes on the Desert Swing and he is now aiming for a victory outside of his homeland as he looks to move up the Official World Golf Ranking.

"After winning at home my next aim was to win a tournament overseas, so it's great to have the chance to tick that one off the list so soon," he said. "Then looking further ahead, getting into the top 100 in the World Ranking is a realistic aim.

"When I saw I was three or four shots clear after the turn there were a few nerves, but I handled myself really well and managed to pick up a couple of birdies coming in."

The tournament continues in Kuala Lumpur today.

Meanwhile Marc Leishman and Adam Scott are both in the top 10 of the US Tour's Northern Trust Open through two rounds.

Leishman (four-under) is third and Scott (three-under) is tied seventh at Riviera.
