Victorian secondary school students have now got more golf opportunities than ever before with the 2016 SSV Secondary Schools Golf Event attracting over 700 students across 21 division events and 1 state final. That state final was competed in chilly blustery conditions today with the top 80 senior students (Grades 10-12) converging on Churchill Park Golf Club to do battle for the titles.

With players needing to qualify through their local division events to earn a spot at the state final, the race to the end was always going to be a tough one. In the pursuit for the titles today the final positions for the Vic u17 State Team were also decided with the team heading away to the National Championship in mid-August.

In the girl’s section Kallista Do (Maribyrnong College) was able to take home the title by a clear 3 shots from Mount Clear Colleges Amy Leeson. Kallista Do was able to fire a round of 79 in very testing conditions and with a history of great golf behind her it was only a matter of time before she was able to claim a state championship. Kono Matsumoto (Parkdale Secondary College) who is part of the 2016 Vic u17 State Team finished in third position.

It was a little closer race to the finish in the boy’s section. Jhett Perry (Warrnambool College) in the end was able to take home the trophy from three other players just a single shot behind. Jhett Perry’s round of 74 was a solid performance that included a rollercoaster ride on the back nine with 3 birdies, 3 bogeys and 3 pars. The three boys that finished a shot back included Max Charles (Montmorecy Secondary College), Toby Walker (Eltham High School) and Jhetts brother Caleb Perry. In the countback to decide the final positions Max Charles come out on top taking second place overall and Toby Walker taking third.
