Off to a winning start to their British tour, the Golf Australia high performance team is chock full of confidence for a big month ahead.

GA national squad member Cameron John saluted in the Scottish Strokeplay Championship at the weekend at the famous Gullane Golf Club, east of Edinburgh, including a remarkable amateur course-record 63.

With the famous St Andrew Links Trophy across the Firth of Forth this weekend, an unofficial match against Scottish Golf next week in Kilmarnock, then the time-honoured British Amateur in Wales the following week, there are plenty more haddock to fry.

And with an extraordinary eight of the top 27 last week Aussies – and David Micheluzzi missing the cut by just one after a bold run – John says there’s a great vibe around the booming squad.

“It was awesome for the guys. You can feel the buzz. Everyone woke up and was so excited … the guys were close, ready to go and even the guys who didn’t make the cut were there to support,” John told SEN Radio.

“Dave came out to caddie for me … and everyone was really happy (when I won). It was awesome.”

John’s eight-under salvo, the first of two rounds on the final day, was his first course record and set up his second international win after victory in the Argentine Amateur late last year.

“I was five under through 14, then finished birdie-par-birdie-birdie and didn’t realise, but as soon as I finished, I was told … it was awesome,” said the 17-year-old who happily described “everything” as working well during his round.

“I missed one green, but got up and down and made eight birdie putts, missed maybe 1-2 fairways all day – it was pretty tough to fault anything.”
