Kono eligible for interstate debut

This time last week long-time junior player Kono Matsumoto, born in Sapporo, Japan, became an Australian citizen.

Let me explain why this is significant...

Kono has won many junior tournaments, highlighted by her win at the 2014 Australian Junior Championship, and has been a member of the Golf Victoria Elite Squad for the past 2 years.

Kono has also been an integral part of the past two Division 1 Pennant Finals playing for Victoria GC, and she tasted victory this year with her proud teammates winning the Division 1 final at Spring Valley.

Despite all of this, she has never been able to represent Victoria at interstate level… until now!

Ironically, the citizenship ceremony was held at Sandhurst where Kono and her family live, backing on to the golf course.  This has provided the perfect setting for Kono to improve her golf game and reach an elite level.  This didn’t go unnoticed at the citizenship ceremony where her golfing skills were duly noted to all attendees.

Kono will pit her skills over the summer against a group of talented and emerging Victorian junior girls, all vying for state selection in 2017, both at junior and open level.

In her final year as a junior golfer, the dual member of Sandhurst and Victoria is hopeful she will finally make her state team debut.

“It would be great to represent Victoria at junior level as it’s my last year as a junior and I’m finally able to play," she said.

"The girls in the state teams over the years really have had such a great time away at the interstate series. Many are my close friends and I really want to be a part of it."

We wish her well in her quest for selection and in her life as an 'Aussie'.
