Leishman to make World Cup debut

Adam Scott will pair with Marc Leishman as Australia’s pairing at the upcoming World Cup of Golf in Melbourne.

Scott had been chosen by Jason Day as his partner for the November 23-27 tournament at Kingston Heath, but the world No.1 was forced out with a back injury last week.

The choice of partner was subsequently left with Scott, who today plumped for good mate Leishman to play on one of his favourite courses.

“I’m extremely excited about playing in the World Cup of Golf with Adam. I can’t wait to represent my country back home in Australia,” said Leishman, who wished Day a speedy recovery.

“(Kingston Heath is) probably in the top three (global courses) … along with Augusta National Golf Club and St Andrews.

“It’s not long, it’s a very fun golf course and you can shoot really low there. You’ll have a lot of wedges in your hand – you have to be really precise,” Leishman said.

Leishman, famously, was paired with Scott in the final round when the Queenslander won his green jacket at The Masters in 2013, roaring his mate into a playoff on the 72nd green at Augusta National.

The affable Victorian will make his first World Cup of Golf appearance, but has twice represented the International team at the Presidents Cup.

Scott and Leishman were paired together in 2015 in South Korea during the Saturday foursomes when they defeated Bubba Watson and J.B. Holmes 1-up. Leishman also defeated Jordan Spieth that year in singles play.

The 2016 World Cup of Golf will return to a 72-hole, stroke play, two-man team event format.  The first and third days of competition will be the foursomes (alternate shot) format and the second and final days are fourball (best ball) play.
