2016 Mazda Mildura Winners
Ron Simmons, Karen Gleeson, Alan & Jeff Lay, Jenny Stephenson, Malissa Wheatley

Mildura Golf Club hosted one of the final remaining 2016 Mazda Victorian Fourball Championship qualifying rounds this morning in fine and warm conditions, prior to an afternoon of 40 degree heat. Close to 80 players from across the Murray Darling region competed over the beautifully presented Mildura Resort layout which requires accurate play amongst the tree lined fairways and to the intricate green complexes, featuring quality bunkering on many.

The best four-ball stableford score of the day came from Red Cliffs’ Karen Gleeson and Ron Simmons with 47 points, who took out the Mixed section and earned a place at the 2016 Mazda Victorian Championship Final at Sorrento and The National. Liz and Peter George from Riverside were runners-up on 40 points on countback from Mildura’ s Jan Mierswa and Clif Ferguson.

The women’s section of the qualifying round saw the Broken Hill duo of Jenny Stephenson and Malissa Wheatley progress to the Mornington Peninsula final with a winning score of 43 points. Mildura’s Sue Walmsley and Robyn Downs finished runners-up with 41 points with clubmates Bev Stone and Margaret McGlashan in third position with 37 points.

In the men’s section, it was a Mildura trifecta with three pairs all tying on 44 points. Alan and Jeff Lay were the winners on countback from runners-up, Ceaser Fraiia and Joseph Denaro with both pairs qualifying for the final. Chris Ashworth and Greg Chandler finished in third place.

The final qualifying round of the 2016 Mazda Victorian Four-Ball Championship calendar will be held at Shepparton Golf Club on the morning of Monday 14 March following the rescheduling of today’s event due to extreme heat.

To conclude a wonderful summer of golf with close to 1000 pairs competing across the State, the 2016 Mazda Victorian Fourball Championship Final will be contested over 36-holes for 100 pairs of players in men’s; women’s and mixed sections. The first round will be played at Sorrento on Monday 21 March with the final round played over the Ocean course at The National on Tuesday 22 March.
