Page and Fernando capture Keysborough titles

2016 Regional Series Keysborough

In what seemed like Deja vu from last year’s event, players battled freezing conditions and strong winds this morning in the Stuart Appleby Regional Series event at Keysborough. For the first 9-holes temperatures remained in single digits with an ice cold wind averaging 60kph. Eventually the wind became too severe and play was suspended for an hour before the weather gods cooperated and provided a gap where the players could finish their final few holes in much calmer conditions.

Nathan Page was seemly unphased by the harsh conditions, returning a stellar round of two over-par 75 to capture victory in the overall boy’s title. The 13 year old's form was actually best during the worst of the conditions shooting an unbelievable outward nine of two under. It was only after play resumed when the National member dropped a few shots but his final tally was still four shots better than the next player in the field.

Shanaiah Fernando has continued her winning streak of late by claiming victory in the overall girls section. The Yarra Yarra member fired a round of six over-par 80 to edge out Piper Stubbs on a count back after the pair finished tied. Today’s title is Fernando’s third win in succession, the first two coming at the Sorrento Open Amateur and the Peninsula Junior Masters.

In addition to his overall prize today, Nathan Page also walked away with the division A nett title after prevailing on a countback form Ben Rozen after they both returned rounds of 73 nett. Royal Melbourne’s Imogen Jones was too strong in the division B section following her handicap levelling round of 74 nett today. In C division, Max Fedmowski from Cranbourne backed up his victory last year in the exact same event with a score of 34 points.

A big thanks must be extended to the Keysborough Golf Club for their support year after year.

Many players will also be teeing it up at Woodlands Golf Club tomorrow morning for the second instalment of the Stuart Appleby Regional Series this week.
