Pascoe crowned Women's Senior champion

2017 Matchplay Winners
Glenys Ferguson, Helen Pascoe & Josie Ryan

The match play semis and finals of the Women’s championship took place today at Lakes Entrance GC as 12 players battled it out on course for their respective titles. After the first matches were sent off at 7:30am for a beautiful sunny morning of play, the weather went pear-shaped for the afternoon finals as players were forced to play through fierce winds and hail.

In the championship flight, second seed Jo Sellen had a tough battle in her semi-final with Lyn Bennett and eventually went on to win 3 and 1 to progress to the final. The other semi-final was an even closer affair between Helen Pascoe and Elizabeth Smyth. Pascoe, the number one seed and 2014 winner of this event, was pushed all the way by Smyth and finally got the job done on the 19th. Pascoe then came out of the gates flying in the final against Sellen and found herself 3 up after 6 holes. However, Sellen wasn’t going to give up the fight and managed to get back to all square after the 11th hole. Sellen continued to pull back any lead that Pascoe managed to build and the pair were all square after 17. On the par 4 18th, a wild drive from Sellen proved to be costly as she then had to punch out from the trees and hit her third just short of the green. Pascoe remained steady and found the green in regulation, put her third putt close and ultimately claimed the championship after Sellen conceded the final putt.

Interstate visitor Glenys Ferguson from Waneroo in Western Australia has taken out the 55-64 year flight for the second year running, winning 2 up against Kerry Henningsen (Huntingdale GC) in the semi-finals before overcoming 2011 Victorian Women’s Senior Amateur Champion Heather Harley (Kooringal GC) 3 and 2 in the final. Josie Ryan from Headland GC (QLD) enjoyed a win in the 65+ flight, defeating Kerry Elphinstone of Rosebud this morning and sealing the deal with a win on the 19th over June Tickell (Trafalgar GC) in the final. Ryan held the lead by a small margin for most of the match until Tickell hit back on the 16th to make it all square and the match stayed that way through 17 and 18. The pair then headed back down the first hole and it was Ryan who held her nerve and made a steady par to win the title.

A very warm thank you is to be extended to the Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale Golf Clubs, for their hospitality and generosity to all of the players this week. Both clubs were delighted to welcome both fields and proud to showcase their courses in fantastic condition. The championship moves across to Shepparton and Hill Top next year on Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 September, 2018.
