Perry heroics keep dream alive

Dylan Perry is enjoying a great week at Royal St George's.

The Hunter Valley's Dylan Perry will fly the Australian flag alone when The Amateur Championship reaches quarter-final stage tonight at Royal St George's in England.

The Vintage Golf Club member enjoyed two great wins overnight and became the last Aussie when Wodonga's Zach Murray bowed out in the round of 16.

Perry accounted for Frenchman Frederic Lacroix in a weather-interrupted morning match, before grabbing a thrilling win on the 19th hole against American Hayden Springer.

After a two-hour lightning delay with his match against Lacroix knotted through 16 holes, Perry came out firing making a clutch birdie on the 17th hole.

"We were all square through thunderstorm delay, then after we headed back out, I piped a drive and hit a seven iron to a foot to go one up down the last," he told Golf NSW.

The New South Wales state team representative faced another tough opponent in the afternoon and Springer had him in trouble for much of the match.

But showing a superb never-say-die attitude, Perry eventually sealed his berth in the quarters with a birdie on the 19th hole.

"I was three down with five to go this afternoon but came home really strongly,” Perry said.

"I hit it to about a foot-and-a-half on the 19th; I was buzzing!"

Perry, who won the Riversdale Cup in March, reached the round of 16 at last year's Amateur Championship, so was delighted to have taken the next step.

"Yeah, it was a big one to overcome last year's success, I’m very pleased," he said.

"I’m going to get a good night’s rest and simply go and do my thing tomorrow."

Perry, who relocated to the Gold Coast in February, said he had been thrilled with support from home.

"A few of the guys from The Vintage have been up all night messaging, so have the crew at Sanctuary Cove."

The quarter-finals begin this afternoon with Perry's match off at 5.30pm (AEST).
