Port Phillip Open Amateur reaches halfway

Rik De Longville and Nathan Barbieri
Rik De Longville (Commonwealth) and Nathan Barbieri (Monash Country Club) after their hole-in-one and albatross respectively.

Day 2 of the 2017 Port Phillip Open Amateur at Commonwealth began under grey skies as players battled the beautifully manicured Commonwealth Golf course.  With the top 52 men and 22 women (ties included) progressing to the weekend, every shot was becoming critical to those players hovering around the cut line.

Kyle Michel produced the score of the day with a four-under 69 to sit atop of the Mens leaderboard alongside fellow Victorian state team member David Micheluzzi (Cranbourne) at -7. South Australian Billy Cawthorne and Metropolitan Golf Club’s Lukas Michel were the next best at -6 for the two days. Rounding out the top 5 was Martias Sanchez (Royal Melbourne) at -5 after he backed up his 69 yesterday with a 72 in the afternoon. Any score better than +6 was enough to make the cut.

In the Womens section, Grace Kim (Avondale) fired a one-under 72 to finish at -8 for the first 36 holes, three shots ahead of playing partner Stephanie Bunque (Victoria) who finished at five-under after her even par round of 73. Rounding out the top three was Kono Matsumoto (Victoria) with a total of  a -4. The round of the morning went to Jessica Pickwick (Kilmore) with a three-under 70, giving her a total of  -3. Pickwick was joined by Monica Johnson (Moore Park) at  -3 after her two rounds of 71 and 72. After two days of play 24 women advance to tomorrow at Kingston Heath with +8 and better being the score required to make the cut.

Amazingly for the second straight day a hole-in-one was scored, this time on the 146m Par 3 15th. Commonwealth’s own Rik De Longville produced his first official hole-in-one at his home course.  Not to be out done, Nathan Barbieri (Monash Country Club) stunningly had an albatross on the 460m Par 5 16th. A remarkable effort by both players!
