Quayle maintains American roll

Anthony Quayle

In-form Queenslander Anthony Quayle has again put himself in contention in a key American amateur tournament.

Quayle, fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Players Amateur last week, turned in the day’s best round at the time-honoured Southern Amateur in South Carolina today to vault back into the mix.

After six birdies on day one, the Gold Coaster poured in another seven today, but this time minimised the collateral damage as he vaulted to three under with a fine 67, now T7 and just three off the lead of American Michael Nagy.

Play was abandoned early because of lightning in the vicinity of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club at Myrtle Beach, with the top 66 and ties to advance on resumption tonight (Australian time).

Three other Aussies are right in the mix at one under with Brett Coletta (74) the only one of them finished; Cameron Davis (one over through six) and fellow Sydneysider Austin Bautista (one under through three) well placed.

Red-hot Harrison Endycott is again handy at one over through just three holes of his second round, while David Micheluzzi carded a solid 70 to vault back into the frame at three over.

Cameron John hit back from his wayward opening 80 with a five birdies in the day’s second best round of four-under-par 68. His four-over total will be right around the cut line when it’s made overnight.

Those on the wrong side of that mark are Zach Murray, Travis Smyth (both +9), Daniel Gale (+10) and Louis Dobbelaar (+15).
