Round 2 - Rain cancels play at Yarrawonga Mulwala

The second and final round to the 2016 Yarrawonga Mulwala Junior Open was cancelled this morning after heavy rain overnight. With greens under water a decision was made to shorten the event to 18-hole and award the prizes based on yesterday’s round on the Murray Course.

13 year old Nathan Page has again continued to impress with his victory today. His scintillating round of three under par 69 yesterday notches up his second Stuart Appleby title for the winter school holidays.  Cobram-Barooga’s Steffanie Vogel walked away with the overall girl’s title after signing for a very solid round of level par 72, six shots ahead of her nearest competitor.

Yarrawonga Mulwala’s Benjamin Casley took home the overall handicap honours after recording a nett score 63, 9 shots better than his 16 handicap.

Round 1 - Stellar scores at Yarrawonga Mulwala

A full field of 88 eager juniors teed off today on the beautiful Murray course at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club in chase for the 2016 Stuart Appleby titles. Now into its fourth year, the event has continued to gather momentum and provides the ideal setting to wrap up a busy school holiday period and escape the cold winter in Melbourne.

Conditions were conducive for low scoring with temperatures cool early on but also calm. The greens were rolling true and still relatively firm but the recent heavy rainfall meant course placed its full length from tee to green.

After capturing victory last week in horrendous conditions at Keysborough, Nathan Page is once again poised at the top of the leader board after an opening round 69. The National member made the most of the calm conditions cruising to a level par front nine of 36. Three birdies at 10, 14 and also 16 gave Page an inward nine of 33 for his tally of three under par.

Defending champion Antony Majstorovic also had a solid round of one under 71 to place him two shots back. Majstorovic will be looking to weave the magic he found in last year’s victorious playoff tomorrow morning.

Cobram-Barooga’s Steffanie Vogel will sleep with the lead in girls section after signing for a round of level par 72. Vogel will take a comfortable six shot buffer into tomorrow’s final round over both Melanie Foster and Nasya Sohail. With poor weather expected tomorrow morning any lead may prove critical.

In the overall nett section, Yarrawonga Mulwala’s very own Benjamin Casley set the course on fire using all of his local knowledge for a round of 63 from his 16 handicap. Howlong’s Jacob White looked destine to leap frog Casley for the handicap lead but a few too many bogeys on the back nine had him sign for a score of 66 nett.

While the older players were battling it out in the 36-hole section, a group of players contested in the Stuart Appleby Rookie Series event on the Executive course. Rookie gun Aryan Sharma once again took home the U11 boys title while Sonny Distanislo had a great round of 37 to walk home with the 16 boy’s title.

Zara Shinn-Mahony, Eisha Sohail and Hannah Wong all tied with a score 58 in the U11 girls section so a count back was need to separate the trio. In the end Hannah prevailed and won the gross prize while Eisha captured the nett prize. Sayumi De Costa shot a round of 42 to win in the U16 girls and Katya Adkin was the nett winner.

Players will move to the Lake course tomorrow morning for the second and final round commencing via a shotgun start at 8:15am.
