Ruffels eyes off Argentina

Ryan Ruffels is churning out the frequent flyer points as he chases down a Web.Com Tour card.

The 18-year-old pro didn’t qualify for the second stage of the secondary American tour’s Q-school recently, but has far from given up hope of hitching his wagon to the 2017 schedule.

Ruffels charged through the field in the final round of last week’s Colombia Classic to finish fourth in just his third start on the LatinoAmerica Tour.

The $US7233 cheque propelled him to 34th on the tour’s money list with $US22,633 and the top five to get cards to the Web.Com Tour next year.

The Victorian knows he’s leaving his run late after playing seven events on the US PGA Tour via invitation this year, but he’s intent on making his late charge count.

“Only the top five get those cards, so in other words, I probably have to win one of the last three events,” Ruffels said.

Having flown several times back and forth between his Florida base and South America in the past few weeks, the dual Australian junior champion will have this week preparing for a massive fortnight in Argentina.

The Argentina Classic and Argentina Open, both in Buenos Aires, will at least give him a chance to cool his jets in one city for a week before flying back to Miami for the season-ending Shell Championship.

But Ruffels, who has a second and a fourth in three events on the tour, likely needs to find at least $60,000 in those three events to make the grade.

“Unfortunately it means I won’t be able to come home and play the Australian Open, which is disappointing,” he said.

“But I’m sure everyone understands I’m trying to get started over here and this has to take precedence at the moment.”
