Sandhurst Senior Concludes in Style

The first day of Spring for the year marked the opening round of the 2016 Sandhurst Senior Amateur, and has provided good scoring conditions for the small but quality field.
Play for the day ended with a 3-way tied leaderboard, seeing Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath), Ken O’Brien (Rossdale) and Mark Abeyaratne (Peninsula-Kingswood) share first position, all returning a 74 off the stick. Sitting one shot behind is Rich Rivers’ Ian Frost on 75, and local man Bryce Birtwistle a further one shot behind on 76.

In the nett section, Ignatius Duivenvoorden (Yarram) has placed himself 3 shots ahead of Paul Lulofs leader Ken O’Brien and Sandhurst’s Wayne Aigner, returning a nett 68 leading into round 2 of the event.
Players will play the Champions course at Sandhurst again tomorrow, and now after all players seeing the course already, the champions title isn’t safe in anyone’s hands yet.

In the women’s section, Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) has taken a 3 point lead over Heather Harley (Kooringal), carding 28 Scratch Stableford points off a scratch handicap. This isn’t the first time these two ladies will be going head to head in the final round of an event, often crossing paths on their way to glory. Sharon Thompson (Sandhurst) is showing her local knowledge, taking the lead in the Stableford section with 36 points, 4 points ahead of Heather.

Play will begin tomorrow morning via a multi-tee start at 8:00am.

Helen Pascoe and Gordon Claney
Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) and Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath) claim the Gross titles at the Sandhurst Senior Amateur

It was a nail-biting finish in all sections today, at the final round of the second Sandhurst Senior Amateur.

Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath) capitalised on his overnight share of the lead to take home the title by three shots from friendly rival Ian Frost (Rich River). In perfect conditions on the challenging Champions Course, Claney carded a 1 over 73 for a two round total of 147 to claim victory. Both players have been finding great success recently, travelling around the state and overseas playing great golf and showcasing their skills.

Howlong member Allen Brown demonstrated solid form with a narrow single shot lead on the field to win the nett section. The 10 marker carded fantastic rounds of nett 73 and 70 for a 36-hole total of 143. Trailing Allen was Stephen McConville, the 15 marker from Centenary Park in second position and Wayne Phillips (Gardiners Run) a further shot back on 145.

In the women’s section, Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) finished with 55 Scratch Stableford points to win by 7 points from Heather Harley (Kooringal  on 48 points. These ladies aren’t strangers to each other, often meeting in the last round of events to challenge each other to the last hole.

Local lady Nola Ryalls claimed the Stableford section, with a two round total of 64 points, edging out Harley and club compatriot Sharon Thompson for the win by one point

Thank you to the Sandhurst Club for a true test of golf on their 36-hole manicured layout. The next event on the Senior calendar is the Lang Lang Senior Amateur, being held Monday 12 September.
