Adam Scott has soared into  contention at the Barclays Championship in New York with a third-round 65.

The Australian, who started the week ranked third in the Fedex Cup points table, made a hole-out eagle from 120 metres and bombed a few long birdie putts enroute to a six-under total to be within two of the lead with a round to play.

Scott, 36, made an astonishing 50-metres of putts in a round where his putter ran hot, taking a new mindset into the day at Bethpage Black.

“To just simply forget about everything with the putting, technical and feel and anything, and just kind of look and stroke and not care where it went to be the answer, is nice,” Scott said. “Because I don't think there's any major issues. “I just thought, what difference does it make if I hit this past the hole, because I've left every putt short. And if it goes past, it might go in.”

Rickie Fowler of the United States leads the tournament at nine-under par through 54 holes after a 68 today, a shot ahead of countryman Patrick Reed at eight-under. Scott is third at seven-under, having grabbed the lead through 14 holes before the later groups came in. His fellow Australian Jason Day also is in the mix at five-under, just four from the lead, after scrapping an even-par 71 today.

Scott made huge birdie putts at the 12th and 14th holes and could have gone lower; he narrowly missed great birdie chances at the 17th, where he inexplicably left his putt short, and at the 18th.  “It feels good,” Scott said. “I feel like it's been a while since I've really been in the mix.”

Another Queenslander, John Senden is tied-55th and just inside the projected list of 100 players who will progress to the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston next week. Marc Leishman and Aaron Baddeley both missed the cut but will still go through to next week.
