Sondjaja charges into Pacific Am

Ruben Sondjaja has been in great form lately in the USA.

In-form Sydneysider Ruben Sondjaja put on a withering run today to charge into contention at the Pacific Coast Amateur in Washington.

Sondjaja, a former national junior team player who broke through for his first college win for the University of Iowa State in April, made five birdies in seven holes to charge – momentarily, at least – into red figures and lead the strong Australian contingent at Seattle Golf Club.

The Bonnie Doon member was left to rue the closing two holes for the second straight day, but still managed to card a fine 69 to finish even par, seven shots behind runaway leader K.K. Limbhasut (69), of Thailand.

Sondjaja, who impressed at last week’s Golf Australia national camp in Houston and was runner-up at this month’s Trans-Miss Championship, had been one under in his first round before closing bogey-double. Today, he suffered another bogey-bogey close to keep him pegged at T11.

Still, he leads his countrymen, who are largely bunched within striking distance.

Sydney’s Cameron Davis (71) and Melbourne’s Brett Coletta (72) share 14th place at one over, while their fellow GA national squad members Cameron John (74) and Zach Murray (77) sit at two over and three over, respectively.

Murray’s score was made worse than it should have been when his approach to the first, that had been tracking towards a greenside bunker when it ricocheted off an electrical cover and went out of bounds leading to a double-bogey six.

Of the other Aussies, Penrith’s Troy Moses (75) and Perth’s Fred Lee (74) sit at five over, while Anthony Quayle (73) improved to sit six over, David Micheluzzi (76) fell to seven over and Kiran Day (76) continued to battle.
