Stage set for blockbuster Pennant finale

Zach Murray
Commonwealth's Zach Murray is undefeated in the 2017 Pennant season heading into Sunday's final.

The 2017 Golf Victoria Men’s, Women’s and Colts Pennant Finals will be played on Sunday 21 May at four of Victoria’s leading courses.

In total, 23 of the 48 competing clubs will be represented in the six Men’s, four Women’s and five Colts Pennant Finals to be played at Keysborough, Sandhurst, Northern and Sanctuary Lakes Golf Clubs. Five clubs also have multiple teams involved in finals across the three competitions.

Close contests are anticipated in all finals, particularly in the Division 1 Men’s and Women’s finals at Keysborough with many of the Victorian Boys, Girls, Men’s and Women’s State Team players lining up for their respective clubs.

History may be made in the Men’s Division 1 Final with The National attempting to win the club’s first Division 1 Men’s title since the competition commenced in 1899, while opponents and 2017 ladder leaders Commonwealth will be chasing the club’s 14th Division 1 flag and third title in the last four years.

Both lineups boast an array of young talent with Commonwealth’s team including Victorian Men’s State Team players Zach Murray and Cameron John, along with rookie trainee professional and former State representative Frazer Droop. The National will be headed by 2012 Australian PGA Champion Daniel Popovic and a host of experienced Pennant campaigners  including Clay Nicholls and Andrew Villenger.

Commonwealth enters the final with just one loss for the season, after amassing 36 individual match victories out of the 49 played. Coincidentally, Commonwealth’s only loss was to The National by a margin of four matches to three when the teams met at Commonwealth in Round three.

Victoria Golf Club will be looking to go back-to-back in the Division 1 Women’s Final when it meets Commonwealth in the final beginning at 11.00am at Keysborough on Sunday.

Finishing on top of the Division 1 Women’s ladder, Victoria has an array of talent including three members of the victorious 2017 Victorian Women’s State Team in Kono Matsumoto, Gabriela Ruffels and runner-up at the 2015 Victorian Women’s Amateur Championship Stephanie Bunque.

Commonwealth has similarly enjoyed a solid season and will be desperate to reverse the club’s loss to Victoria in last year’s final. Victoria comfortably won the encounter between the two clubs earlier in the year when it recorded a resounding five match to two victory in Round two at Peninsula-Kingswood.

17-year-old Alexandra Hilliard, who was a member of the 2017 Victorian Girls Team, will spearhead Commonwealth’s team with Joanna Flaherty and Madison Peters also in good form with each winning five matches from seven throughout the season. It’s set to be an exciting showdown with Victoria looking for its 14th Division 1 Women’s title and second in succession, while Commonwealth has won eight Division 1 Women’s flags, the last of which came in 2011.

In the Division 1 Colts final, Commonwealth will meet Woodlands with the former seeking multiple Division 1 successes with their respective Women’s and Men’s teams also contesting finals. Since the Colts Pennant competition started in 1954, Woodlands has won six Division 1 titles with the last coming in the year 2000. Commonwealth has been prolific since winning the club’s first Division 1 Colts title in 1987, taking a further seven flags over that time, including five victories since 2010.
