Students shine at State Final

Boys Winners
Jesse Trembath, Harrison Gomez & Max Fedmowski

From all corners of the state 107 primary students congregated on the Kooringal Golf Club yesterday eyeing the prize of state champion. In a year that welcomed 2169 students to the event, hosted at over 50 venues and giving plenty of new students an opportunity to get out on course and just have a go.

Taylah Robinson a member of the U12 Victorian Team took the girls title in fine style shooting a three over par 74, a remarkable achievement in challenging conditions. Taylah’s win yesterday has her in fine form ahead of the Pacific School Games, an international school meet that the Victorian Team has had some success at in the past few years.

This win puts Taylah on the same page as recent Rio Olympic Australian Golf representative Su Oh, underlying the quality of player coming through the primary school system. Fellow U12 Victorian team member Molly McLean shot a 5 over 76 to finish second, with Louise Rose Baliton shooting 80 to fill third place in the girls section.

Harrison Gomez was equally impressive in taking out the boys title, engraving his name on a trophy alongside some of Australia’s current touring pros. Harrison has shown great talent over the last few years and it was no surprise to see him up at the top of the leader board at the end of the day. Harrison finished second last year in this event and it was great to see him go one further in 2017. Harrison shared the top of the leader board with Max Fedmowski as both players finished on a score of one under 70. With the countback falling the way of Harrison that left Max in sole second position. Jesse Trembath was one shot further back on 71, finishing in third place.

SSV strategic manager Nick Mooney was thrilled with the event commenting on the success of the pathway through, noting ‘’that 12 past players of the event attended the Men’s Australian Open last week, and the enormity of having a player go on and play golf for Australia at the last Olympics’’. The partnership between Golf Victoria and School Sport Victoria is as strong as ever, both striving to give students as many opportunities to get on course as possible.
